Interpretive Film

For this module I had to work on two films, one as an individual, and one as part of a group. The individual film was a two minute video documenting a space of my choice. The group was a five minute interpretive film.

The interpretive film was slightly different with it being a group project and the third film production I would work on as part of this course. Once we were sorted into our groups, we all presented what piece of text we believed we should produce into this five minute interpretive film.

I presented Act 3 from Everything Must Go (Jones, 2000) which is a monologue about the struggles of growing up in a wales which has been abandoned by those with power in Westminster. As a group we decided to use this piece because even though it was written in the 2000s and is referring to Blair’s government, the pieces still fits well in today’s society.

Because I chose the text it was decided I should direct the piece especially as I had prior knowledge of it and an idea in my head of what I wanted. I decided to use a running actor throughout the film to have a constant between the shots of cardiff and of my studio shots. I was inspired by tracking shots used by the director David Fincher which inspired me to do this in my production . (Perno, 2014) I was also inspired by the opening monologue in the Trainspotting (dir. Boyle, 1996).

For the studio shots I was inspired by a modern art exhibition I saw last Summer in the National Museum in Cardiff which saw people stood still with a black background with symbolic meanings of what their job was. For instance there was a miner who had an oxygen mask on which was connected to a piece of coal to symbolise the lung problems many miners have. This is what inspired my shot of a male smearing lipstick across his face for the label us line in the monologue.

For the audition process we had the module tutor to email a casting call to the performing arts students. We interviewed those who were interested and then chose our actress.

Sophie Price was the actor we chose, she had the right sort of voice that I envisioned the character having. This is one part of the pre-production I would do differently as I did not have chance to run through the piece with Sophie before recording, and I did not contact her in regards to her costume after telling her she had the part as I thought she would remember what we asked her to wear which resulted in her wearing heeled boots while running.

The recent election victory of Trump and the result of the European Union Referendum last year extremely influenced this piece for me as I feel it stands for all the morals I hold dear. I wanted it to be passionate and powerful and strong, but I feel that it did not come across that way. I think the piece would have benefited If the sound designer and myself had a chat about what we believed the sound should be for the piece and worked on it together as I felt that It was slightly lacking because I had not communicated with the sound designer on what I was envisaging.

Over the two pieces I feel my work has improved greatly, however I still feel that my films have an amature feel to them which I would like to work on for future productions. The contrast between the two pieces are strong but I don’t feel like I have found a style that I am comfortable with or fit within.
